In the colorful world of RMB collection, the fluorescent two-cent paper note is like a unique pearl, exuding a distinctive charm. It belongs to the second set of RMB paper cents and, despite its face value of only two cents, it attracts the attention of many collectors thanks to its special fluorescent effect and the historical stories behind it.
The design of the fluorescent two-cent banknote is simple yet full of characteristics of the times. The main picture on the front is a soaring aircraft with smooth lines and clear details, reflecting the expectations and exploration of our country for the development of the aviation industry during that period. Below the aircraft is marked with the word "Two Cent", and the overall color of the banknote is mainly blue, giving a sense of stability and depth. On the back, there is a national emblem pattern, as well as the words "The People's Bank of China" and "Two Cent" written in Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan and Uyghur scripts, highlighting the authority of the national currency and the concept of ethnic integration.
The most distinctive feature of it lies in the magical fluorescent effect. When illuminated by a UV lamp, the banknotes will present a dreamlike scene. Some fluorescent two-cent banknotes will display full-page blue cloud patterns. These clouds come in various shapes, either resembling fluffy cotton candy piled up or resembling lively ribbons dancing in the wind, complementing the plane pattern on the front. It seems that the plane is flying through the clouds, creating a picture with a highly romantic color and artistic appeal. This fluorescent effect is not present on every two-cent banknote; it is a product of a specific period and specific printing batch, which makes fluorescent two-cent banknotes stand out in the collection market.
From the perspective of version classification, the fluorescent two-cent banknotes mainly appeared in the reissued two-cent banknotes issued in 1981. The original two-cent banknotes first issued in 1955 had a ten-digit serial number on the right upper corner of the front side, which was composed of three Roman numerals and seven Arabic numerals in sequence. However, the reissued banknotes in 1981 only had three Roman numerals and no sequence number. During the printing process of the reissued banknotes, due to the use of paper and ink similar to those used in the fourth series of circulating banknotes, some of the paper and ink contained fluorescent powder, which exhibited different colors, positions and intensities of fluorescence under a purple light, thus giving rise to this special version known as the fluorescent two-cent banknote.
Currently, in the coin collection market, fluorescent two-cent banknotes have various subcategories. Among them, "Xiangyun Fluorescent Coin" is relatively well-known. Its main serial numbers include 155, 515, 551, 552 and 525. It is called "the 5 golden flowers among the two-cent Xiangyun coins" by collectors. Among them, 155, 515 and 552 are the most common. According to the distribution of the fluorescent patterns on the front and back of the banknotes, it is divided into positive Xiangyun and reverse Xiangyun. Positive Xiangyun can be further divided into full-page strong positive cloud, lightning strong positive cloud, weak positive cloud, lightning weak positive cloud, and special weak positive cloud of the airplane type; reverse Xiangyun can be further divided into full-page strong reverse cloud, lightning strong reverse cloud, weak reverse cloud, and lightning weak reverse cloud. Due to the differences in the existence quantity and fluorescent effect of different categories, the market prices also vary. For example, a single sheet of lightning strong positive Xiangyun can reach about 38 - 55 yuan, a single sheet of full-page strong lightning reverse Xiangyun can be worth about 55 - 80 yuan, while ordinary non-fluorescent reprinted two-cent banknotes have a single sheet price of only a few yuan or even lower. Thus, it can be seen that the unique collection value of fluorescent two-cent banknotes is remarkable.
As time goes by and the development of the collection market, fluorescent two-cent banknotes have gained increasing popularity among collectors due to their scarcity, unique artistic appeal, and the historical memories they carry. They are not only an important part of the monetary culture but also a special carrier for documenting the changes of the times. In the future collection field, they are expected to continue to shine and attract more people to explore their mysteries.
